GCHS FCCLA was anything but “sleepless in Seattle” during the organization’s National Leadership Conference (NLC), as they took on the best from across the country and came out on top in both team and individual categories.
The first-ever GCHS Knowledge Bowl Team started competing in November 2023 to earn a berth at nationals and placed 2nd in the nation out of the original 80 teams.
Michenna Meredith, Gabe Secora, Laslen Hatfield, Cierra Clark, and Tara Wells completed an online test in March and then made it through a bracketed system while at nationals. The final two teams competed on stage in a head-to-head academic match hosted by LifeSmarts.
Ethan Butler placed 1st in the nation in the Hospitality, Tourism Challenge Test, and Tabitha Crossman earned a Silver Medal in the Nutrition and Wellness STAR Event.
FCCLA Advisor Cody Mooneyhan received the national Star Events Volunteer Award, one of only four national FCCLA Adult Award winners.
She served as an on-site consultant for Star Events during the conference. She also presented an adviser workshop on integrating FCCLA projects into the Family & Consumer Science classroom, to turn everyday topics into hands-on learning experiences.
NLC attendees also got to take in sights and sounds of the Pacific Northwest during their Seattle stay including the beauty of Mt. Rainier, Pikes Place Market, the original Starbucks, The Space Needle, and more. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in many ways.
