Aaliyah Vigil, Keona McQuady and Misty Gardner

Building skills and confidence. Guiding students to use those skills to help others. That’s how GCMS Reading Interventionist Misty Gardner makes a difference in the lives of her students and beyond. She recently worked with 8th graders Keona McQuady and Aaliyah Vigil to complete two reading projects. The girls created a "storybox" to go along with a Halloween book as part of a read-aloud project for several Wilkey kindergarten students. In addition, the girls recorded the story using an online tool.

Gardner taught them how to record their voice and video edit a Canva read-along project that could be shared with all K-1st grade teachers in the district to use in their own classrooms. Keona also read in person to the Wilkey students this week - a really positive experience for both.

The success of this type of multi-layered project is an accomplishment with benefits for both Keona and Aaliyah as well as younger students just learning to read.

“It was definitely a student-led project and a reminder for me of why I wanted to become a teacher,” said Gardner.
